What do CNAs and GNAs do?

Certified Nursing Assistants, also known as Nurse Aides, help care for physically or mentally ill, injured, and disabled or infirm individuals in hospitals, nurse care facilities, and mental health settings. They provide hands-on care and perform routine tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Medical staff.

Where do CNAs and GNAs work?

Nursing Assistants work in nursing homes, nurse care facilities, mental health settings, assisted living facilities, hospitals, group homes, and home health care.

What is the difference between CNAs and GNAs?

Geriatric Nursing Assistants (GNAs) receive basically the same training as CNAs and work in similar places. Essentially, GNAs are CNAs who take and pass the optional Nurse Aid (GNA) Board exam. It is a two-part exam – written and skills. If you pass this board exam, you will then be registered by the Maryland Board of Nursing as a GNA. This is an all-day exam. The good thing is that you may know your result within the same day.

What do I receive after completing the CNA program?

After completing the CNA program, you will receive a “Certificate of Completion”. With that certificate, you will be instructed on how to log into the Maryland Board of Nursing website to complete your CNA Application. Upon completion, your name will be listed on the Board of Nursing website after they have completed processing your application. You or your prospective employers will then be able to log into the Board website to find your name and your “Registration Number.” You can then print a copy for your records. The Board of Nursing process is not automatic. It may take a few weeks.

How soon and how quickly can I complete the application process with the Board?

You are advised to begin the process as soon as possible. You can begin the process the day after you receive the Certificate of Completion from Stein. You can complete the process in a matter of hours after you have done the fingerprint and background check. Do not delay!

Can I use the fingerprint and background check result I just did with another company or organization?

No! The Board requires that you use their form, which also contains the Board’s specific fingerprint & background check ID number.

Do I automatically become a CNA when I graduate from the school?

No! No school does that in Maryland. You must complete the Board of Nursing online application. Only the Board of Nursing will certify you as a CNA.

How soon can I register to take the GNA exam?

You may register for the GNA Exam as soon as you graduate. You will need a copy of your certificate from the school to register. Registration for the exam is on a first-come, first-served basis. The date of the exam cannot be guaranteed until we receive confirmation of the date from the Red Cross. It is not in the school’s control.

How do I register for the GNA exam?

You have to come to the school with a copy of your “Certificate of Completion” from Stein, an official photo ID, and your registration and exam review fee.

Do I have to take a Review course before sitting for the GNA exam?

Yes.

Most importantly, they can find jobs at hospitals much easier than those with only CNA or GNA. They may also earn more because of their multi-skill abilities.

What is the difference between a CNA/GNA and a Nurse Technician/Patient Care Technician?

Nurse Technician/Patient Care Technicians are Certified Nursing Assistants or Nurse Aides with additional training in other areas including basic phlebotomy, EKG and IV Therapy. They are often referred to as multi-skilled technicians because of their broad knowledge and versatility.

What will I receive after I graduate from the program ?

When you graduate, you will receive a “Certificate of Completion”. You will also qualify to register with the Maryland Board of Nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant, if you are not yet a CNA or if the CNA was waived for you prior to your admission.

Will I receive a separate certificate for Phlebotomy, EKG and IV Therapy?

No! You will only receive a certificate of completion for the Nurse Tech/Patient Care Tech Program. There will be no separate certificate given for completing the separate modules. No school in Maryland does that. Just because you did the Phlebotomy, EKG, IV Therapy modules, it does not mean that you are a Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician or IV Therapy Technician. It just means that you have knowledge on these areas and could do some of the basic stuff they do, but not necessarily all.

Why are Nurse Technicians/Patient Care Technicians called Multi-Skilled Technicians?

They are called multi-skilled technicians because they are not only CNAs or GNAs, but are CNAs and GNAs trained in other skills such as drawing blood, taking an EKG and preparing a patient for IV therapy. They work under the directives and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Keep in mind that they are not Phlebotomy Technicians, EKG nor IV Technicians.
